A Geologist in the Making ...

On the same day as the Great Katy Bug Adventure (A Budding Entomologist), Noli also tried her hand at geology (more like a rock collector, actually).

She loves to look for rocks with crystals in them and fossils and those with funny shapes.

When she found this one, I pointed out that it kind of looked like the shape of Texas (loosely, I'll admit) which she thought was cool since we live in Texas!

and then she turned it over .... a heart!
Can you see it?

She found one with crystals ....

and another sort of heart, and a perfectly rectangular one ....

and this really cool one that looks like a real human heart!
From the front

and the back
"Isn't that just the coolest," she says. "There are tiny shells in it!"

and then, oh my! A FOSSIL!
don't you think those are dinosaur toes?

inside to wash her loot ....

clean rocks!

We learned that geology is the study of the earth, including rocks, and that petrology is specifically studying rocks! And that someone who likes to look at rocks is called a "rockhound."
She thought that was pretty funny!

The Magic School Bus Inside the Earth (Magic School Bus Series)

Then we read the Magic School Bus book "Inside the Earth" which was pretty good and funny too!

I think she did quite well with her geology lesson!

What a flashback this post brought to mind. Looking for rocks, digging for rocks was a favorite pastime for the kids and me when they were small. I recall in '97 when we vacationed in Maine. We visited Pebble Beach. That was such a cool and interesting spot with so many beautiful rocks. We brought home a good stash of them, too. It was great fun reading your 'G' write up!

Your pictures are beautiful! When I was a child my father used to varnish the stones that I brought home from the beach & wow does that ever bring out colors and other details. Stopping by from Blogging Buddies.
Thanks

As a kid I used to collect rocks and fossils and I loved learning what they all were and identifying them. Now my 3 yr old collects rocks too!

Noli found some fabulous rocks! She's definitely a rock hound and perhaps will one day be a geologist, even if as a hobbyist. How fun that you get to spend this time with her while she learns such interesting information about the earth on which she lives!

I LOVE ROCKS!!! I love them so much that I have a lighted niche in my bathroom to display some of my collection. For her birthday, I am sending my granddaughter a collection of crystals from all over the world. This is an excellent post!!!

This must be how my SIL got started. She is now in her fifties and has piles of collected rocks all over her house. The fill containers in every room, lay in piles in corners, are stacked on windowsills and mantlepieces, surround all the plants inside and outside, form lines around the deck and porch rails. If there is a empty sport anywhere you can bet that after her next vacation it will also be filled with some new rock.

Those are some great rocks! I have one that I found when I was in middle school that is shaped like a heart - not a real human one but a valentine one. I have kept it all these years. My kids love Magic School Bus.

What a gorgeously sweet little geologist!

I hope she keeps that interest!

I was always hoping my son would be one (so he could take me to look at rocks and stuff - ha!) but it didn't happen!

We used to varnish rocks as well.

My middle Grandlittle came home from vacation and asked me, "Did you bring rocks home from your trip?"

When I told her yes...she got all excited and said she had, too!

Thanks for a fun link for the letter "G".
